山陽−山陰間の交通の要所で、鉄道においてはJR西日本いわく「ビッグX」の交点と位置づけられている。 ちなみに「X」の四辺はそれぞれ豊岡(城崎)、舞鶴(天橋立)、大阪、京都である。

城崎温泉や天橋立など、北近畿の観光名所から日帰りできる位置にあたるので、 日程を長くとっての旅行ならここで連泊すると良いだろう。

ホームは5本、各駅停車よりも特急列車の往来のほうが多かったりする。

跨線橋はちょっと昔の駅を感じさせる。

有人改札と発車案内(さすがにLED表示化しているが)、そして明り採りのステンドグラス。昭和の駅はいまだ健在である。

In the old station, guidance of a train was displayed in this way on a wicket and stained glass for lighting was given glory to. This station left charm same as old days.

しかしこの駅も高架化して生まれ変わろうとしている。喫茶店の店員の人いわく「うちも11月で終わりですよ」

北近畿タンゴ鉄道の駅舎は駅前ロータリーの脇から入る。JRの駅から乗り換え窓口を通って直接入ることもできる。
